Israel and Palestine

 Israel and Palestine

On May 14, 1948 a section of Palestine was proclaimed the State of Israel. This was after the UN voted to partition Palestine, allowing 56% for a Jewish state and 43% for an Palestine Arab state. However, by 1949, the State of Israel encompassed 77% of the area, and Palestine was 2 separate areas. What was left of Palestine got taken over by neighbors, and its own statehood never came to be.* However, it seems as though the Jews must not have had a major presence in the area for many years. If they had been there all along, why the need for UN intervention?

Israel claims that the land was historically theirs.  According to the Old Testament, they have rights to the land.** Jews had inhabited the region for many years, periodically at war or under siege from surrounding people. They were ousted from the area a few times, and had come back to rebuild temples. During the Holocaust, there was a need for their own state.

I think the State of Israel should have been happy with 56% of Palestine. It seems as though the people who were displaced to make room for the State of Israel should have more claim to it -- as they were there. Also, the claim that this is a Holy Land promised to them by God seems rather farfetched. If it was so important, why did the Jews wait so long to reclaim it?

  1. Nicole,

I know you were a little rushed this week. This seems a bit rushed.

This post is like a tv commercial, where I would like to see it drawn out into something more like an hour-long program.

You've got the format in your small paragraphs, they just need more facts and explanation. They're all bones, but no meat.

Try to write more and include more facts to support the structure you started here.
